Horses need adequate fibre in their diet to keep their intestines
working properly. Traditionally this has been supplied by hay.
However, acquiring hay of consistent quality has always been a
problem in Irish climatic conditions.
Advantages of Haylage
Haylage is a beneficial forage solution for horses. Haylage is a dust-free alternative that can help
manage respiratory problems and alleviate coughing symptoms. Haylage is very palatable and
nutritious and is not as dependent on good weather for long harvesting periods.
Growing Grass for Haylage
Close off the field in mid-April. Fertilise and lime on the recommendation of a soil test. Apply
40kg of nitrogen per hectare. Roll the field.
Making Haylage
When preserving grass it is necessary to remove either the moisture or the air as these are the
factors that result in mould growth and deterioration. When making haylage the grass is
preserved in the absence of oxygen by bacteria producing lactic acid which in turn lowers the
pH. The air is removed by making tight bales and wrapping them with plastic. Punctures in the
bale wrapping allow the air to penetrate which usually results in mould growth.
